Step #1: Plan Your Concept
Have a clear vision for your setting before you dress the table. Consider the style of cuisine you’re serving, the style of the dishes you’ll be serving with, and what elements like cutlery and glassware are needed. For buffet-style eating, ensure you keep the centre of the table clear. Lay out any casters, coasters, or placemats that you’ll put dishes on in advance. This ensures you’ll have the right amount of space when it comes to dishing up.
Step 2#: Build Up Layers
Start with any napery like tablecloths or runners. This will be the base surface to anchor your decorative pieces. Layer plates and bowls that have mixed colours or textures for a relaxed or eclectic look. Use glassware to add height and for fine dining, keep variety of finishes to a minimum. Napkins are another important layer. Keep folded when dining is casual, or use a napkin ring for a formal touch.
Step 3#: Set a Placemat
This not only protects a table or tablecloth from stains, but helps to define each person’s seat at the table in a fashionable way. We’re finding Lush Leaf to be super versatile design for both casual and formal settings.
Step 4#: Add a Centrepiece
Fresh flowers or greenery are eye-catching and effortlessly add colour and texture. For a long table, consider smaller posies lining the centre of the table to achieve balance and proportion. A centrepiece that is too large will disrupt conversation.
Step 5#: Light a Candle Ahead of Time
Your favourite scent may be calming but can be confusing when mingled with smells of food. Light a scented candle ahead of time so the scent has time to diffuse before the food comes out. For ambient light, stick to simple beeswax candles that are fragrance-free.
Step 6#: Serve a Signature Drink.
This could be as simple as a special bottle of wine decanted into a carafe. Be sure to study up on the notes of the wine to inform your guests. Cocktails are a fun way to get experimental with your glassware. Garnish a Gin and Tonic with a sprig of lavender for an aromatic flavour boost. Coasters will catch any condensation from a chilled cocktail.
