Joss Daly is no stranger to running a busy household. Wife and Mum to a young family, Joss also adds Entrepreneur, Creative Designer, and Director to her tool belt. Founding My Hygge Home in 2017, the brand has been refocussed on stylish tableware thanks to Joss’ flair for minimalism and priority for quality. Her newest collections can be described as “playful, whimsical and on-trend” with a polished take on the humble placemat and hardworking napkin.
She sits down with lifestyle writer Larissa Vendramini to share in how this one-woman show plans to transform dining from hectic to hygge.
These collections came about after you’d finished renovating your family home. Tell us more about why you started My Hygge Home.
I had invited extended family over for dinner in our new home. I pulled out my old cork-backed placemats to set the table and felt disappointed. The designs felt flat. I wanted that amazing hygge setting and when I visualised the table I saw monochrome, simple designs with candles and white flowers. I got to work the very next day!
Why is dressing the table important to you?
I’m so inspired to encourage family and friends to set a hygge table. To talk, listen and laugh, and turn off technology (switch on the ‘do not disturb’ setting for 30 minutes) so you don’t lose connectedness. Research shows that the time and effort for setting the table positively influences the vibe and enjoyment of the meal. It’s a great way to achieve a sense of belonging. For my kids, calling them to help set the table encourages manners and they love being involved.
If you had to pick a favourite design from the new collection, which would it be?
I love the trend and simplicity of Chic Circles, and it was my very first completed design! It’s also hard to go past Sassy Deer… although I love them all!
How did you come up with these creative designs?
I had a very clear vision of having designs that are trendy, abstract and minimal. I put extensive effort into working with artists worldwide who could work with me to beautifully convey my vision for the hygge table. I often manipulate designs with graphics software, playing with aspects like colours, textures, lines to create the looks I love.
What trend do you hope makes a comeback?
Beetle cars, like they had in the 70s! They’re so cute. I would love to see them in neon colours to give a fresh take on an old classic.
Where’s your favourite spot to holiday as a family?
We always enjoy exploring somewhere new and exciting that is different to home. Our favourites are the Gold Coast for the beach, entertainment and beautiful weather. We also enjoy the tranquillity of Kiama, NSW.
What’s your wardrobe staple?
Scarves, they can completely transform any outfit! Honestly, they are the best accessory for any season. I’m convinced rugging up in a wool scarf for winter has stopped me from getting sick! Lightweight cotton scarves with beautiful tones can easily dress up a basic outfit for summer and create movement and shape to a simple silhouette.
Lastly, what business advice would you give to your kids for the future?
Whatever you decide to do for a career, make sure you’re truly interested and that you love it! Don’t feel obliged to follow other people’s paths if it’s not your passion. If it excites you, success should follow.
